I have been working with the FUBAR Labs Hacker Space out in New Brunswick NJ, and will be bringing in a large pile of my tech toys, gizmos, and gadgets to help them in their Tech Expo & LAN Party.
Yours Truly will be there, among Ugster, Mustang, the FUBAR crew, and many other hackers, geeks, nerds, technophiles and the like. $10 Donation Fee 7PM - 3AM Details on location and such are here: http://fubarlabs.com/2009/10/lan-party-and-tech-expo/ We will be doing on-site demos of a lot of the topics covered on BSoD, like Video and Wifi Scanning, Console Hacking, hackable embedded platforms. Im also going to be bringing in a bunch of games to add on to the LAN party. WII BOXING BRAWL!!! Hells yeah!! Lets see who has the most endurance and stamina! I will admit it now, I am bringing in hacked consoles that can also be used to cheat at games. Mehaps we can do some Halo Hacks for the xbox, and some Wii Hacks on Smash Brothers? Ill bring the toys and tools, you bring the morbid curiosity. If you are into hacking xbox games, like Halo Map and Weapon mods, bring in your tool kit. If you cant bring in a laptop with a tool kit, bring in a CD/DVD with your tools and rpemade mods. Same goes for any Wii Hacks/Mods. This isnt going to be a boring sit-down do nothing LAN party, You level of engagement and activity is up to you. If weather permits we can and will go out radio scanning. Wifi, Bluetooth, Phones, video, and everything else. If you want to check out what Ham Radio is all about, we will have live demos there as well, and not just voice links. Hopefully we will have different digital and data modes running for demo purposes. If you have spare rechargeable AA cells, bring em... the video scanners can chew up a lot of power over time. If you are coming from PA or NJ and need a lift, let us know, we will try and help out. |

This was a pretty fun event all in all. We had Rockband on the projector, Halo 3 on a few xbox 360s, and the Wii on the other projector. The space was pretty well stocked with games and tech stuff. There was some interesting demonstrations with the BeagleBoard, WebTV2, WebDT tablets, and a bunch more of our hardware hacking hobbies. A few new people popped up - and many familiar faces. Ugster and I took turns now and again showcasing NES RAM Hacking on the (original) xbox which got some good laughs. In fact, there was a point Ugster was buckled over on the floor hysterical. We had a pretty wicked Duck Hunt Massacre, again.
We got some gaming on between halo 3, NES RAM Hacking, and the Wii. Alice was kicking some ass in Wii Bowling. I did a decent job smashing about in some sword play. I brought in a shitload of games, and even my gamecube. I was hoping to showcase my 'Speed of Plaid' hack for Mario Sunshine, but I was so wrapped up I forgot. Perhaps I can do a short video on it sometime. Because of the way we had the projector set up we were having issues with Wiimote in general so we didnt really hog the wii that much. I helped Phil mod his FT-60 ham radio, the same one mustang and I have. We have it recorded and should make for a nice little video for FUBAR. When its released I will make sure to post a link to it. There is also some cool footage of the MakerBOT in action. For those of you who dont know, the MakerBOT is a homebrew style 3D Extrusion Printer. The concept of how it works is simple, but dont be fooled. It is a very complex machine with a lot of bugs and glitches, but once you get it tuned it can be vaguely useful. All of us decided to gear up and head out into the wireless wilderness of New Brunswick, stocked with an array of scanning gear. Phil, and a few others have been bitten by the radio bug. We need to make a safety vest that says "Caution - This person is known to randomly make immediate stops" for the people that are doing video scanning. More than often we had to regroup as we were out. There were a few interesting video signals. One batch of video sources was coming from a gym, they had 2.4Ghz Video Senders hooked to all the TVs and occupied 3 of the 4 known frequencies. Another signal was coming from a police prescient, but wasnt actively transmitting a video feed. Phil realized that the signal was being switched from different sources, and then a 4-way split screen. Unfortunately they were either all black or gray. This is a spot we need to keep an eye on! I think I did more walking in the two days I was at FUBAR than I have done in this entire month, but it was fun. My EEE 900 was equiped with a WiSpy (thanks MetaGeek!) for a spectral scan of the surrounding area, the WebDT tablets were actively scanning for wifi, and we had some various handhelds sniffing around. I didnt want to take out the radio scanners. Being it was close to 1AM I didnt want to attract TOO much attention. The group got enough odd stares already. Some of the newcomers that came by really seemed to feel like they have been friends for years. They fit in really well and seem to be "one of us" so to speak. Even though they came by as a new face they left as a well known friend. I hope to work with FUBAR some more and get more involved with events. Unfortunately for everyone else I care more about being social than I do holding a camera, so a lot of this event was lost forever in the abyss of memories. This is even more of a reason to get off your ass and go out! If you feel like you missed out, well, you did. Now get off your ass and start getting to know people. |

Foxx pretty much covered it. Thanks to Foxx and Ug for helping me pull together the majority of the tech that we showcased at the event. You guys really helped us make the event work at the last minute. Looking forward to getting that video posted so I can get a jump start on having all my FCC licenses revoked. See you all at the next one.
